Coach versus champion: the difference is influence, not intent.

Many deals stall or fail because sales teams believe they have more internal support than they actually do. Coaches and champions both appear helpful. Both engage in conversation and provide insight. The difference isn't intent. It's influence.

A Coach

Helpful and accessible.

A coach is someone inside the buying organisation who's willing to help you. They share context, offer advice, and shape your understanding of the account. What they usually don't do is influence the final decision.

A Champion

Uses credibility and political capital.

A champion goes further. A champion is willing to use their credibility and political capital to support your position when you're not in the room. Confusing the two creates false confidence, masks risk, and leads teams to misread where real support exists.

Score your contact.

The Champion Test works through the specific signals that separate genuine champions from coaches. A handful of questions about evidence of internal action: has this person opened doors, flagged risks, taken visible action on your behalf? Each signal scores against the champion profile.

What the score tells you.

If your contact scores as a champion, you have someone advocating for your position when you're not in the room. Trust that and protect the relationship. If they score as a coach, you have someone helpful but not influential. The relationship is still valuable. You just need to manage the deal differently.

If the score is unclear, the most likely answer is coach. Sellers tend to overestimate champion strength. The honest read is usually less optimistic than the gut read. That's why the Champion Test exists.

Can a coach become a champion? Yes, and this is often the goal. Champion creation is partly about earning the right to deeper advocacy through how you handle the opportunity. This is central to how Tekweni approaches enterprise and complex B2B sales coaching. Read more about Tekweni sales performance methodology.
